Yerevan-Armenia: In a statement issued by the Holy Etchmiadzin Mother See’s Information System on May 7th, the Armenian Apostolic Church’s Supreme Spiritual Council expressed strong reservations regarding the Armenian government’s recent territorial concessions in the Tavush region to Azerbaijan.

The statement emphasizes the Church’s prior stance against such actions and criticizes the demarcation activities as “very dangerous” and a source of “new threats” to Armenians. It highlights the resulting public outcry, including the emergence of the “Tavush for the Motherland” civil movement.

The Church leadership acknowledges the anxieties of the Tavush residents and urges them to express their concerns peacefully and lawfully. It emphasizes the clergy’s commitment to supporting the people and calls for law enforcement to act with restraint and respect for legal procedures.

The statement implores the Armenian authorities to prioritize peace negotiations while addressing the legitimate needs of affected communities. It underlines that any demarcation efforts must be undertaken with the preconditions of preventing future war, the return of occupied Armenian territories, and ensuring the safety of Armenian settlements.

The Church emphasizes the importance of national unity and discourages succumbing to negativity. It reiterates its commitment to strengthening Armenia’s statehood, protecting Armenian identity, and fostering regional peace.

The statement concludes with a prayer for peace, solidarity, and unity within Armenia.
