Bucharest-Romania: Last week, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church decided to dedicate 2025 to the Centennial of the Romanian Patriarchate and the Romanian Orthodox confessors of the twentieth century.

According to a press release issued by the Chancellery of the Holy Synod, 2025 will mark the Solemn year of the Centennial of the Romanian Patriarchate and the Commemorative Year of the Romanian Orthodox priests and confessors of the 20th century.

The decision was made in the context of the Romanian Orthodox Church commemorating its 140th anniversary of attaining autocephaly and one hundred years of elevation to the patriarchal rank in the coming year.

The establishment of the Romanian Patriarchate was a decision made by the Holy Synod on February 4, 1925. This initiative was explicitly declared in the aftermath of the Great Union in 1918.

Numerous Romanian saints, confessors incarcerated under communism, and esteemed clergymen have been chosen for canonization by the dioceses. Fr. Dumitru Stăniloae, archimandrite Sofian Boghiu, hieroschemamonk Dionisie Ignat, and additional names have been suggested for canonization.

For its Centennial, the Romanian Patriarchate is also planning to arrange the blessing of the mosaic iconography of the National Cathedral. Recently, the icon of Christ Pantocrator was installed, covering an area of 150 square meters.

Additionally, 2025 was designated as the “Centennial Year of the Romanian Patriarchate” on a national level; the Chamber of Deputies approved this resolution on February 20 and forwarded it to the President of Romania for promulgation.
