Serbian Patriarch Porfirije Meets with Metropolitan of Limassol and Abbot of Vatopedi, Discusses Church Unity and Shared Heritage

Belgrade-Serbia: His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Porfirije held a cordial meeting on April 28, 2025, at the Patriarchal Palace in Belgrade with His Eminence Metropolitan Athanasius of Limassol from the Orthodox Church of Cyprus, and the Venerable Archimandrite Ephraim, abbot of the renowned Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos.
During their discussion, the esteemed religious leaders exchanged perspectives on significant matters concerning the life and mission of the Orthodox Church in today’s world. A particular focus was placed on strengthening the fraternal bonds between the Serbian and Greek peoples, as well as the deep spiritual connection shared by their respective local Churches.
The Metropolitan Athanasius and Archimandrite Ephraim conveyed their deep respect to Patriarch Porfirije and requested his blessing. They also expressed a desire for the transfer of a portion of the holy relics of two revered Serbian saints: the Venerable Justin of Ćelije and Saint Nicholas of Žiča. These saints hold significant spiritual and historical importance for the visitors and their communities.
The meeting was also attended by His Eminence Metropolitan Jovan of Šumadija, Protodeacon Dr. Dragan Radić, a professor at the Faculty of Theology in Belgrade, and Deacon Nikola Kostić, the secretary of the Serbian Patriarch’s Cabinet.
This gathering underscores the ongoing dialogue and collaboration between Orthodox Churches, highlighting their shared commitment to unity and the nurturing of spiritual and cultural ties between nations with a common Orthodox heritage. The request for the relics of Serbian saints further exemplifies the deep spiritual connection and mutual reverence within the Orthodox world.
