Polish Orthodox Church Announces Grand Celebrations for 100th Anniversary of Autocephaly

Warsaw-Poland: The Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church has unveiled a schedule of events to mark its 100th anniversary of obtaining autocephaly (administrative independence) from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

Key Events:

  • August 19, 2024: A nationwide thanksgiving service will be held on Mount Grabarka, a holy mountain revered by Polish Orthodox faithful. The ceremony will include the participation of state officials and the symbolic placement of 100 crosses expressing gratitude to God.
  • November 13, 2024: Commemorating the exact date of the autocephaly document’s signing, a central service will be held at the Cathedral of St. Mary Magdalene in Warsaw. The President of Poland is expected to attend this event alongside a concert of Orthodox church music at the Royal Castle.
  • November 24, 2024: The anniversary celebrations will culminate with a final liturgical service at the Hagia Sophia in Warsaw.
  • Diocesan and Parish Activities: Throughout the year, each Polish Orthodox diocese will hold special services on the patronal feasts of their cathedrals, accompanied by a message from the Holy Synod of Bishops. Similarly, individual parishes are encouraged to incorporate elements related to the anniversary into their regular services.

Cultural Events:

  • International Concert of Orthodox Church Music: This event will be held in Hajnówka, Poland, in May 2024, kicking off a series of cultural events throughout the year.
