Moscow-Russia: His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia participated in and addressed the Inauguration of Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, which took place at the Zaryadye concert hall in Moscow on September 18, 2023. Sergey Sobyanin was re-elected as the Mayor of Moscow following his victory in the mayoral elections, where he garnered 76.85% of the votes.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by President Putin and various other state officials. This marks Sobyanin’s third term in office, with his first term commencing in 2010.

During the event, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill delivered a speech in which he warmly congratulated Sergey Semenovich on his inauguration and the assumption of his role as mayor of Moscow. He praised Sobyanin for his sincere approach to his duties, emphasizing that Sobyanin not only takes a rational approach to problem-solving but also shares in the joys and sorrows of the Muscovites. His Holiness highlighted the importance of this genuine involvement in public service, distinguishing it from mere robotic execution of tasks. He expressed his hope that human civilization would never reach a point where robots control people, asserting that human intelligence, education, and the support of others should always guide high public duties.

His Holiness underscored the uniqueness of Moscow, not just as a dynamic metropolis with an excellent transport system but also as a city that is actively building churches—a phenomenon rarely seen worldwide. He pointed out that hundreds of churches are being constructed in Moscow, reflecting the real spiritual needs of its people. His Holiness appreciated the growing role of religion, especially among the youth, and its significance for Russia’s strength and vitality.

Patriarch Kirill expressed gratitude to Sergey Semenovich for his respectful partnership with the Church, emphasizing that Sobyanin has always respected the Church’s status—separate from the state but not from its people. He commended the absence of interference or paternalism toward the Church from Sobyanin and lauded their positive and cooperative relationship.

His Holiness also addressed the pressing goals of increased security, especially in light of recent travels to the Far East, where he recognized the importance of Russia’s defense capability. He emphasized that victories are not solely won through military might but also through the strength of spirit rooted in religious and humanistic traditions, as well as national self-awareness.

In conclusion, Patriarch Kirill blessed Sergey Sobyanin with the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, a customary blessing in Russian cultural tradition for those entering high levels of public service or embarking on significant journeys. He invoked God’s blessing on Sobyanin, praying for his good health and prosperity for the benefit of Moscow and its residents. His Holiness’s speech was met with repeated applause from the audience.
