Nine Bishops Consecrated for The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church

Addis Ababa- Ethiopia: Nine new Episcopes were consecrated by His Holiness Abune Mathias of Ethiopia at the Monastery of Saint Mary, the See of the Patriarch on 16th July 2023. Many metropolitans of the church, several priests, and many faithful participated in the consecration ceremony.

The nine were elected by the Holy Synod on July 5, 2023, against the much objection of Church scholars and associations that considered the whole process uncanonical, untimely, and based on ethnic lines after a committee of Archbishops selected 18 monks in an undisclosed manner. The Prayer of the Holy Eskeem for the Bishop-Designates took place on Saturday, July 15, 2023.

The nine newly consecrated bishops and their dioceses are as follows.

1. Abune Gabriel (formerly called Abba Sahele Mariam Tola) – for the Diocese of West Shewa
2. Abune Nicodimos (formerly called Abba Welde Gabriel Abebe) – for the Diocese of East Hararge
3. Abune Ephraim (formerly called Abba Tilahun Werku) – for the Diocese of Buno Bedelle
4. Abune Elsa (formerly called Abba Amde Michael Haile) – for the Diocese of East Wellega
5. Abune Bertelomeos (formerly called Abba Haile Mariam Getachew) – for the Diocese of Dire Dawa
6. Abune Epiphanios (formerly called Abba ZeTeklehaymanot Gebre) – for the Diocese of Horo Gudru
7. Abune Daniel (formerly called Abba Estifanos Gebre) – for the Diocese of West Wellega
8. Abune Gerima (formerly called Abba Kinfe Gabriel Tekle Mariam) – for the Diocese of Gedeo, Amaro, and Burji
9. Abune Temotios (formerly called Abba Sebehat Leab Haile Mariam) – for the Diocese of Dawro and Konta
