Metropolitan Ioanniki of Sliven Laid to Rest

Sofia – Bulgaria: Metropolitan Ioannikiy of Sliven, who died on January 9, 2024 at the age of 84, was laid to rest at the Cathedral Church St. Dimitar Solunski in the city of Sliven on January 11, 2024. The funeral service was led by Metropolitan John of Varna and Great Preslav, deputy of the widowed Sliven diocesan see until the next election.

His journey began in the Sofia Theological Seminary and continued through the Theological Academy St. Kliment Ohridski. Ordained as a monk in 1961, he rose through the ranks, becoming an Archimandrite and later a Bishop. In 1975, he was consecrated Metropolitan of Sliven, where he served faithfully for over 40 years.

Metropolitan Ioanikiy is remembered for his profound love for God and the Church. He was a zealous advocate for unity, spirituality, and enlightenment. He immersed himself in the truths of faith and generously shared his knowledge, translating invaluable ascetic works.

His long and fruitful ministry bore witness to his dedication. He guided and encouraged his flock, leaving a significant mark on the Sliven Diocese and the hearts of its people.
