Georgian Catholicos-Patriarch Applauds European Commission’s Positive Assessment and Recommendation for EU Candidate Status

Tbilisi -Georgia: In a statement released on 09 November 2023, His Holiness Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II of All Georgia expressed joy and gratitude following the European Commission’s positive evaluation of the steps taken by the Georgian authorities. The Commission has recommended to the European Council that Georgia be granted candidate status for European Union (EU) membership.
Throughout the years, representatives of the European Union, including European Commissioners, have consistently acknowledged the unique cultural significance of Georgia as an integral part of European heritage. Emphasizing the importance of preserving and developing Georgia’s Christian traditions, spiritual values, and ancient culture, the EU has continually asserted that these elements are crucial not only for Georgia but also for the broader European community.
In response to the news, the Catholicos-Patriarch underscored the long-standing support for European integration from both the Georgian people and the government. He expressed hope that Georgia’s rich cultural tapestry, deeply rooted in Christian traditions, will contribute significantly to the progress and unity of the European family.
The Catholicos-Patriarch stated, “This decision is the result of the collective efforts of our people and the government. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to everyone involved in this success.” The recommendation for candidate status reflects a positive acknowledgment of Georgia’s commitment to European values and aspirations.
