Bulgarian Orthodox Church Sets Stage for June 30th Patriarchal Election

Sofia – Bulgaria: Following the passing of Patriarch Neophyte in March, the Holy Synod has announced a series of key dates leading to the election of his successor.

Patriarch Neophyte of Bulgaria Enters Eternal Rest

On June 30th, 2024, a special Patriarchal Electoral Church Council will convene to choose the new spiritual leader. In preparation, elections for delegates to this council will be held in all dioceses on June 2nd.

Meanwhile, on June 20th, the Holy Synod will meet again to shortlist three eligible metropolitans as official candidates for the position of Patriarch. These candidates must meet specific criteria outlined in the Church’s statutes, including being over 50 years old and having served as a Metropolitan for at least five years.
