Bishop Antonije of Moravia Enters Eternal Rest

Moscow – Russia: Bishop Antonije of Moravia, vicar of the Patriarch of Serbia, representative of the Serbian Orthodox Church under the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’, rector of the Serbian Compound in Moscow, entered eternal rest on March 11,2024. Date of the funeral will be announced later from the Serbian Patriarchate.
Bishop Anthony was born on July 23, 1970 in the city of Valjevo (Serbia).
In 1990 he graduated with honors from the Theological Seminary in honor of the Three Saints at the Krka Monastery. In 1988, while studying at the seminary, he took monastic vows at the Zhichsky Monastery, in 1989 he was ordained to the rank of hierodeacon, and in 1991 to the rank of hieromonk.
In 1995 he graduated with honors from the Moscow Theological Academy, receiving the title of Candidate of Theology the following year for his dissertation on the topic “The current situation of the Serbian Church – the history of the Serbian Church from 1945 to 1995.” In 1996 he was awarded the rank of singel. In 1996-2000 he served as steward and governor of the Studenica monastery.
In 2000, by decision of the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church, he was appointed teacher at the Theological Seminary of St. Peter of Dabrobosan in the city of Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina). In the same year, he became an associate professor and head of the departments of liturgics and church-national history at the Academy of Music of Sarajevo State University.
In 2001 he was elevated to the rank of protosingel.
In 2002, by decision of the Council of Bishops and the Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church, he was elected rector of the Compound of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Moscow and awarded the rank of archimandrite.
In 2002, he was appointed official representative of the Serbian Orthodox Church under the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ and rector of the Patriarchal Compound of the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul at the Yauz Gate (Metochion of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Moscow), remaining in this position until his untimely death.
By the decision of the Council of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church in 2006, he was elected vicar of the Patriarch of Serbia with the title of Bishop of Moravich. The episcopal consecration took place on July 23, 2006 in the Belgrade Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel.
From 2003 to 2018 – professor of liturgics and canon law, head of the department of liturgics at the Russian Orthodox University of St. John the Theologian, where he defended his master’s thesis on the topic “Liturgical traditions in the Serbian Orthodox Church.” From 2018 to 2022, he served as dean of the Philosophical and Theological Faculty of the Russian Orthodox University of St. John the Theologian.
In 2019, at the Orthodox Theological Faculty of the University of Presov (Slovakia), he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic “Relations of the Serbian and Russian Orthodox Churches in 1944-1950.” in the materials of the archives of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church.”
The late archpastor was the author of a number of church historical studies, as well as guides to Orthodox shrines, collections of sermons, translations into Serbian of works by Russian-speaking authors, and scientific publications in Serbian periodicals. In 2023, Vladyka Anthony was awarded the highest award of the XIV International Slavic Literary Forum “Golden Knight” in the category “History of Slavic Peoples” for the monograph “Relations of the Serbian and Russian Orthodox Churches 1945-1950. Based on documents from Russian archives.”
