Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople Condemns Police Action Against Catholicos

Constantinople- Turkey: The Patriarchal See of Istanbul has issued a strong statement condemning the blocking of  His Holiness Catholicos Karekin II of the Holy See of St. Echmiadzin and All Armenians, by the police of the Republic of Armenia on May 28,2024. This incident has sparked widespread outrage within the Armenian Apostolic Church and among its global followers.

The statement from the Patriarchal See highlights the gravity of the insult committed against His Holiness and underscores the deep sadness and concern felt across the Armenian community. The Patriarchal See emphasized that the valorization of the new republican chairs of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church should ensure that such disturbing events are never repeated.

The Patriarchal See of Istanbul reaffirmed the importance of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the freedom of conscience and worship of its followers, which are symbolized by the person of His Holiness the Patriarch of All Armenians. The statement stressed that, regardless of political circumstances, any encroachment on these values is unacceptable and detrimental to Armenia’s standing in the civilized world.

In solidarity with the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and its Throne, the Patriarchal See of Istanbul joined other Patriarchal Sees of the Armenian Apostolic Church in expressing their full support. The statement concluded with a call for unity and peace, quoting a hymn: “Heavenly King, I prayed to your immovable protection, and in the name of my worshiper, I kept it in peace. Amen.”
