Cypriot Archbishop Calls for UN Action on Human Rights, Expresses Concerns about Turkish Intentions

Nicosia – Cyprus: Following a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulidis, Archbishop George of Cyprus urged the United Nations and its new envoy to prioritize the human rights of Cypriots and hold Turkey accountable for its actions. He also expressed concerns about the Turkish government’s “fixed plans” for Cyprus.

The Archbishop described on January 09,2024, that his meeting with President Christodoulidis as “productive,” stating they discussed issues involving the Church, the Makarios Foundation, and the planned architecture school at Faneromeni school. Additionally, they covered the ongoing Cyprus issue.

When asked about his concerns regarding the Cyprus issue, Archbishop George highlighted Turkish intentions. He expressed worry about Turkey’s “fixed plans” and asserted that the Turkish government is not interested in the well-being of Turkish Cypriots or the human rights of the Greek Cypriot population. Instead, he believes Turkey prioritizes its own geopolitical interests.

Regarding the newly appointed UN envoy for Cyprus, the Archbishop emphasized the need for concrete action, not just talks. He urged the envoy and the UN to fulfill their responsibility of protecting the human rights of Cypriots who have suffered for many years. He criticized the UN’s tendency to seek middle ground between aggressor and victim, stating that such an approach does not serve the cause of justice.

When asked about President Christodoulidis meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader in light of recent developments, the Archbishop deferred judgment, leaving it to the President to set the conditions and determine the timing of such meetings.

Archbishop George’s statements reflect a sense of urgency for protecting human rights and addressing Turkish influence in Cyprus. He expresses skepticism towards the UN’s traditional approach and calls for decisive action against violations of human rights.
