According to the Abbot of the monastery, Abba Gebre Hiwot, the gunmen claimed that the land belonged to Oromia and that the monastic community should leave the area. The slain monks and novice were identified as:

2. Abba Kidane Mariam Tilahun (Secretary of the Monastery)
3. Abba Gebre Mariam Abebe (Serving Priest – Monk, Exegete, and Part of the Administration), and
4. Novice Haile Mariam Seme.
The Patriarchate released a statement attributing the atrocity to OLA gunmen and calling on the federal and regional governments to protect the monastery and its inhabitants.
