Belgrade-Serbia: Serbian Patriarch Porfirije has strongly condemned the recent acts of violence against students, expressing his deep sorrow and urging immediate action. Following the grievous injury of a third student in Novi Sad, the Patriarch emphasized the urgent need for accountability and justice.

“I am horrified to learn that a third student has been seriously injured, this time in the already wounded Novi Sad. I expect that those responsible for these and all other crimes will be punished in accordance with the law,” Patriarch Porphyrios stated.

The Patriarch’s statement comes amid growing unrest across Serbia, sparked by student protests in Belgrade against corruption, economic instability, and the government’s failure to address rising violence in educational institutions. These protests have seen large turnouts, with students demanding systemic changes and an end to impunity for acts of violence. The demonstrations have drawn widespread attention and have increasingly become a focal point of national and international discourse.

Highlighting the incompatibility of violence with Christian principles, Serbian Patriarch Porfirije called for an end to hatred and conflict, urging society to return to fundamental human and Christian values.

“Violence has never brought anyone anything good. It is contrary to all Christian principles and as such is unacceptable, especially towards our students. It is the last moment for each of us to do everything in our power to stop hatred and conflict immediately,” he added.

In a significant political development tied to the crisis, Serbia’s Prime Minister announced their resignation, citing an inability to address the growing discontent and to ensure safety for students.

The Patriarch also appealed to those in positions of power to take responsibility for fostering peace and unity. “The greatest responsibility lies with those who have the greatest power,” he noted.

Concluding his message, Serbian Patriarch Porfirije offered prayers for peace, reason, and love in these challenging times, hoping for a collective return to compassion and understanding.
