Bucharest-Romania: In a solemn ceremony at the Patriarchal Cathedral, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church announced the proclamation of 2024 as the “Homageal Year of Pastoral Care and Care of the Sick” and the “Commemorative Year of all Saints who heal without money.” Patriarch Daniel, leading the event, emphasized the divine command and social duty of caring for the sick.
The proclamation addresses the increasing challenges in contemporary society, including the isolation of the elderly and the major medicalization of healthcare leading to further isolation. The Patriarch urged solutions to these difficulties and highlighted the importance of spiritual guidance in addition to medical care.
Activities planned for the year include exploring themes such as the pastoral work of the Church for the sick, the social-philanthropic and medical work of the Romanian Orthodox Church, and commemorating saints known for their healing without seeking payment.
Patriarch Daniel stressed the role of emotional support, compassion, and effective communication in enhancing the healing of those suffering. The proclamation aims to strengthen the commitment to caring for the sick, aligning with the Church’s mission to extend the work of the Lord Jesus Christ in healing both body and soul.
