Representative of Egyptian Monasticism Arrived in Russia

Moscow – Russia: On December 31, 2023, Monk Zeus el-Makari, a representative of the Coptic Church, landed at Moscow’s Domodedovo International Airport following an invitation from His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’. Blessed by His Holiness Patriarch Tawadros II of the Coptic Church, Monk Zeus is a resident of the Monastery of St. Macarius the Great in the Nitria Desert.
The warm reception at the airport included Hieromonk Daoud el-Anthony, representing the Coptic Church in Russia, S.G. Alferov from the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, and representatives of the Synodal Department for Monasteries and Monasticism, namely nun Sevastiana (Aljanova) and nun Ekaterina (Vorobyeva) of the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent.
Monk Zeus’s visit is part of a collaborative initiative between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Coptic Church, supported by the Commission for Dialogue. Over the next few months, he will reside at the St John the Theologian Monastery of the Ryazan Metropolis, immersing himself in the monastic practices of the Russian Orthodox Church. This exchange program aims to foster mutual understanding and shared experiences between the two Orthodox traditions.
