Polish Orthodox Educators Gather to Address Education Reform’s Impact on Religious Instruction

Warsaw-Poland: The 17th National Conference of Methodological Advisors and Inspectors of Teaching the Orthodox Religion took place on February 6,2024 at the Orthodox Culture Center in Warsaw. The conference, attended by representatives from all Polish Orthodox dioceses, focused on the ongoing education system reform and its impact on Orthodox religious education.
Addressing Challenges and Opportunities:
Organized by the Orthodox Metropolis of Warsaw, the conference aimed to equip inspectors and advisors with knowledge about the latest developments in education reform. Discussions centered on planned changes by the Ministry of Education to enhance the effectiveness of Orthodox religious instruction in schools and catechetical centers. Additionally, the conference addressed fostering positive attitudes towards different denominations and national minorities, adhering to recommendations from both the Church and the Ministry.
Clerical and Ministerial Presence:
The conference commenced with a moleben (prayer service) led by Father Paweł Sterlingow, followed by an official meeting with His Eminence Metropolitan Sava and representatives from the Ministry of National Education. Discussions covered the current state and final stages of the education reform, particularly regarding its implications for religious education in the context of the Orthodox Church.
Experience Sharing and Collaboration:
The afternoon session saw participants exchanging experiences and best practices in organizing religious education. Emphasis was placed on the role of diocesan teams in improving the quality of teaching and fostering the spiritual growth of Orthodox youth, particularly in the light of the approaching 100th anniversary of the autocephaly of the Polish Orthodox Church.
Dr. Jan Zeniuk, Director of Orthodox Metropolis Religious Education, moderated the conference, which saw the participation of 22 inspectors and advisors from across Poland. The event concluded with expressions of gratitude and a shared meal, solidifying the spirit of collaboration among those dedicated to Orthodox education in Poland.
