Belgrade-Serbia: His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia has paid tribute to the Serbian soldiers who fought and died in the Battle of Cer during World War I. In a message delivered at the commemoration of the 110th anniversary of the battle on August 19, 2024, Patriarch Porfirije emphasized the enduring gratitude owed to these heroes.
The Battle of Cer, fought from August 16 to 19, 1914, was a significant turning point in the war. Despite being outnumbered, the Serbian army achieved a decisive victory over the Austro-Hungarian forces. This victory was a testament to the courage and determination of the Serbian soldiers, who fought for their homeland with unwavering resolve.
Patriarch Porfirije stressed the importance of remembering the sacrifices of the past. He warned that a nation that forgets its history loses its foundation for the future. The Patriarch called on Serbians to honor their ancestors not just in words but through their actions, living lives of faith, integrity, and service to the community.
