Patriarch of Eritrea Abune Kerlos (Cyril) Enters Eternal Rest

Asmara – Eritrea: His Holiness Abune Kerlos (Cyril), Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Church entered eternal rest on December 02, 2022, at 4:15 pm in Patriarchal residence. Abune Kerlos (Kirollos) was the 5th patriarch of Eritrea from 13 May 2021 (Term Contested).
Abune Kerlos was elected as patriarch on 13 May 2021, during the lifetime of Martyr Abune Antonios of Eritrea, and was enthroned as patriarch on 13 June 2021. Abune Kerlos was not considered the head of the church by other oriental orthodox churches till the death of Abuna Antonios. Recently the bilateral relations were reaffirmed through a visit to the Coptic Patharich and communication with other patriarchates.

Abune Kerlos was born in 1926 (1920 – Eritrean calendar) to Rev. Tesfaselassie Tekle and Mrs. Woletemedhin Hagos. His early name was Haile Mariam. He was consecrated as a bishop by Pope Shinoda.
