Kyiv – Ukraine: In a show of solidarity, His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon, Primate of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), visited the Holy Ascension Banchen Monastery in Ukraine and participated in a Divine Liturgy alongside His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kyiv and All Ukraine.

During his speech following the service, Metropolitan Tikhon emphasized his unwavering “brotherly love and support” for Metropolitan Onuphry, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), and the Ukrainian people.

Reaffirming Ukraine’s Right to Self-Defense

Metropolitan Tikhon’s address went beyond expressing solidarity. He acknowledged Ukraine’s right to defend itself against “false aggression,” a clear reference to the ongoing war with Russia. However, he also urged Ukrainian authorities to uphold human rights and international law.

Prayers and Support from Across the Atlantic

The American leader highlighted his delegation’s presence as a symbol of prayer and love from the entire OCA for the Ukrainian people. He also participated in the ordination of a new deacon, Serhii Gubka, demonstrating the continuation of the Church’s spiritual mission during these challenging times.

Mutual Respect and Shared Struggles

Metropolitan Onuphry welcomed Metropolitan Tikhon’s visit, expressing his joy at their joint prayer for peace in Ukraine. He presented the American leader with a commemorative gift, followed by a reciprocal expression of gratitude from Metropolitan Tikhon.

The exchange highlighted the importance of maintaining strong inter-church relations, especially during a period of regional conflict.

Strengthening Faith in Turbulent Times

Metropolitan Tikhon commended the Banchen Monastery’s vibrant spiritual life and social service, emphasizing how these acts embody the enduring strength of the Orthodox faith. He stressed that faith is not a relic of the past but a vital force offering solace and guidance in the present.

A Visit of Solidarity and Continued Support

Metropolitan Tikhon’s visit to Ukraine began on June 1st in Chernivtsi and will include visits to several other religious sites. This trip serves as a powerful symbol of international Orthodox support for the Ukrainian Church and its people as they navigate the ongoing war.
