Historic Cleveland Cathedral Damaged in Fire, Community Rallies

Cleveland, OH: A fire on 28 May 2024, caused significant damage to the historic St. Theodosius Orthodox Cathedral in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood.
Flames erupted around 3:30 pm EST, prompting a swift response from local fire crews who battled the blaze. While the extent of the damage remains under assessment, photos circulating online show charring to the roof.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Acting quickly, Priest Jan Cizmar, Dean of the Cathedral, along with clergy, parishioners, and neighbors, worked to remove and secure holy items from the fire’s path.
Taking to Facebook, Father Cizmar expressed gratitude to firefighters and the outpouring of support from the community. He encouraged continued prayers for the Cathedral’s recovery.
His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of Chicago and the Midwest arrived Tuesday evening to assess the damage. A service will be held on the Cathedral grounds at 11:00 am on May 29,2024, offering solace and a chance for the community to come together.
St. Theodosius Cathedral, a Cleveland landmark and house of worship for over 112 years, has played a significant role in the city’s history. The outpouring of support following the fire reflects the deep connection the Cathedral holds for the community.
