Sofia – Bulgaria: In a shocking act of vandalism, the grave of Bulgaria’s recently deceased Patriarch Neophyte has been desecrated twice within a few days, according to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
Located under the colonnade of the metropolitan church “St. Nedelya,” the Patriarch’s final resting place was first desecrated on Saturday, April 14th, and again on Monday, April 15th, late in the evening. Security footage from the church captured the incidents, which involved unknown individuals removing and damaging the cross adorning the grave, as well as breaking parts of the surrounding marble.
“The desecration of Patriarch Neophyte’s grave is a deeply disturbing act of disrespect towards the memory of a respected religious leader,” said a spokesperson for the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. “We have notified law enforcement authorities, and they are taking action to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.”
This news comes just days before a planned Requiem Holy Liturgy and memorial service on April 21st at the “St. Nedelya” church, marking 40 days since Patriarch Neophyte’s passing. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church expressed hope that the perpetrators will be brought to justice swiftly.
