Sofia – Bulgaria: Despite a heavy downpour, dozens of faithful gathered at the Metropolitan Cathedral “St. Nedelya” in Sofia on Sunday, April 21st, to commemorate the 40th day since the passing of His Holiness Patriarch Neophyte, the head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

The Divine Liturgy was led by His Eminence Metropolitan Grigoriy of Vratsa, Vice President of the Holy Synod. Several Metropolitans, Bishops, and clergy participated in the service, including representatives from the Russian and Romanian Patriarchates.

Following the Liturgy, a memorial service was held for Patriarch Neophyte. In a heartfelt speech, Metropolitan Grigoriy praised the late Patriarch’s qualities, describing him as “a true example of a person, a monk, and a Christian.” He highlighted Patriarch Neophyte’s role as a loving father figure, known for his forgiveness, kindness, and dedication to the Church.

“Although temporarily separated from him,” Metropolitan Grigoriy said, “we will all always feel his paternal love and support.”

The service was attended by dignitaries including Parliament Speaker Rosen Zhelyazkov and Acting Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev. Choirs from the Metropolitan Cathedral and “St. Naum Ohridski” provided musical accompaniment.

A final prayer service (trisagion) was held at the Patriarch’s tomb located within the “St. Nedelya” complex. The continuous stream of mourners visiting the tomb over the past forty days reflects the deep respect and affection held for the late Patriarch. Many offered flowers and prayers, expressing their hope that Patriarch Neophyte finds eternal rest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

This solemn commemoration serves as a testament to the significant impact Patriarch Neophyte had on the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the nation as a whole.
