Yerevan-Armenia: The Supreme Spiritual Council of the Armenian Church issued a statement on June 13, 2024, expressing deep concern over the ongoing political turmoil and security challenges facing Armenia.

The statement criticizes the government’s post-war policies, particularly recent territorial concessions, which have caused anxiety among the Armenian people both within the country and in the diaspora. This dissatisfaction has led to calls for the resignation of the Prime Minister.

The Council condemns the government’s dismissal of public concerns about security threats and its use of threats and disproportionate force against peaceful protesters. It specifically highlights the violent crackdown on a protest in Yerevan on June 12th, which resulted in injuries on both sides.

The statement urges both the authorities and the protesters to act with restraint and respect for the law. It emphasizes the need for a peaceful and calm dialogue to address the current crisis.

The Council also criticizes government officials for attempting to deflect blame onto the Church by attributing false news reports to it. It further condemns the provocation against the Catholicos of All Armenians at the Sardarapat memorial complex in May 2024.

The statement concludes with a call for national unity and a renewed sense of responsibility from the government to serve the people and safeguard the nation’s future. It expresses hope that a shared love for Armenia will pave the way for a more peaceful and secure future.
