Armenian Church Denounces Excessive Force by Police on Protesters

Yerevan-Armenia: The Armenian Apostolic Church’s Supreme Spiritual Council issued a statement on May 28.2024, expressing concern over the use of force by police against peaceful protesters.
The statement, issued following a meeting chaired by His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, condemned the “disproportionate force” used by police and its potential to escalate tensions.
The Church appealed to law enforcement to respect the rights and dignity of citizens and to act with “humanity and legality.” The statement also urged protesters to remain peaceful and avoid provocations.
In a call for unity, the Church urged Armenians to work together to overcome challenges facing the nation and “preserve and strengthen the Armenian statehood.”
The statement concluded with a prayer for peace, solidarity, and hope for the Armenian people.
