Armenian Catholicos Karekin II and Iraqi President Discuss Closer Relations

Yerevan-Armenia: His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, welcomed Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, President of the Republic of Iraq, to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin on 22 November 2023. The meeting focused on strengthening relations between the Armenian and Iraqi peoples, as well as the importance of the Armenian community in Iraq.
The Catholicos expressed confidence that President Rashid’s visit to Armenia would contribute to closer ties between the two countries. He also noted the significant contributions of the Armenian community to Armenian-Iraqi relations and expressed gratitude to the Iraqi authorities for their support of the community.
President Rashid highlighted the aim of his delegation’s visit to further strengthen and develop cooperation between the two countries in various fields. He also discussed the situation in Iraq and the steps taken by the authorities to overcome existing challenges.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of ensuring the harmonious coexistence of national and religious minorities within their respective countries. President Rashid extended an invitation to the Patriarch of All Armenians to visit Iraq, and the conversation also touched upon the Armenian Church’s nationalistic mission.
This meeting represents a significant step towards strengthening relations between Armenia and Iraq. The discussions on strengthening cooperation, supporting minority communities, and fostering interfaith understanding demonstrate the commitment of both countries to building a more peaceful and inclusive future.
