Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus Rejects Same-Sex Marriage
OCP News Service – 02/01/2024
Nicosia – Cyprus: His Beatitude Georgios III, Archbishop of New Justiniana and All Cyprus, has ignited a firestorm of debate over LGBTQ+ rights in Greece by vehemently opposing the legalization of same-sex marriage.
In a recent interview, the Archbishop declared that the Church of Cyprus would fiercely resist any government attempts to legalize same-sex marriage, labeling it “contrary to the teaching of the Gospel.” He expressed concerns about both the concept of same-sex couples and the possibility of procreation within such relationships, arguing that children raised by gay couples would “lack examples to imitate” and potentially follow in their parent’s footsteps.
His stance has drawn strong reactions from both sides of the debate. LGBTQ+ rights advocates condemn his statements as discriminatory and out of touch with modern society, while conservative groups applaud his defense of traditional Christian values.
This public exchange highlights the ongoing clash between religion and LGBTQ+ rights in Greece and Cyprus. Archbishop Georgios’s remarks are likely to fuel further debate and amplify calls for legal recognition of same-sex marriage.
