Belgrade-Serbia: His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Porfirije has issued a strong condemnation of the recent law passed by the Ukrainian Parliament that restricts the activities of the autonomous Ukrainian Orthodox Church. In a letter addressed to His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy of Kiev and All Ukraine, Patriarch Porfirije expressed his unwavering support and solidarity with the persecuted Church.

The Serbian Patriarch recalled the historical persecution of the Serbian Orthodox Church during World War II and emphasized the shared suffering experienced by both Churches. He condemned the current situation in Ukraine as a “new totalitarianism” that is reminiscent of the Roman persecutions of the early Christian Church.

Patriarch Porfirije called on the Ukrainian authorities to reconsider their actions and respect the fundamental rights of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He expressed hope for a just resolution to the crisis and assured the Ukrainian Church of the continued support and prayers of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
