Athens- Greece: Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of Eastern Orthodox Christians, delivered a powerful message at the 9th “Our Ocean” Conference on April 16,2024. The conference, held at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, brought together world leaders, scientists, and environmental experts to discuss the protection of our oceans.
Patriarch Bartholomew, addressing a large audience that included Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens, acknowledged the escalating conflict in the Middle East. He proposed a moment of silence “for the victims of war in Israel and Palestine, as well as on our own continent.”
Shifting focus to the conference’s theme, the Patriarch highlighted the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s longstanding commitment to environmental protection. He emphasized the importance of water as a “sacred gift for all” and a reflection of the interconnectedness of our planet.
“The oceans themselves unite every continent, every coastline, and every citizen of our planet,” he said.
The Patriarch expressed concern that humanity may be the first generation to leave behind a “destroyed planet.” He urged world leaders to take responsibility before future generations and tackle the issues of resource abuse and indifference.
He concluded his speech by calling for cooperation among people, cultures, and religions to address environmental challenges. He stressed the importance of religions acting as “a powerful ally in addressing issues of social justice.”
“All of us – together! – must face what is undoubtedly the most urgent challenge of our time,” he declared.
In a separate meeting, the Patriarch discussed environmental issues with former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who commended the Patriarch’s environmental leadership. Patriarch Bartholomew also met with Prime Minister Mitsotakis to discuss pressing issues facing the world.
The Ecumenical Patriarch’s speech serves as a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of peace and environmental well-being. His call to action emphasizes the shared responsibility we have to protect our planet and its resources for future generations.
