Armenian Religious Leader Meets with Head of EU Observer Mission, Discusses Border Tensions

Yerevan-Armenia: His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, received Marcus Ritter, the head of the European Union’s civil observation mission in Armenia, on April 16,2024, at the Holy Etchmiadzin Mother See.

The Catholicos welcomed Mr. Ritter’s visit and highlighted the importance of the meeting in understanding the challenges faced by the EU mission.

His Holiness expressed concern over the current tensions and security threats faced by Armenian border communities. He emphasized that Azerbaijan’s actions are creating new security challenges for Armenia and hindering peace negotiations.

The Catholicos acknowledged the efforts of international organizations and friendly nations working to restore peace and stability in the region.

Mr. Ritter briefed His Holiness on the activities of the EU observation mission and the situation on the border. He assured the Catholicos that the mission would do everything possible to de-escalate tensions and promote stability in Armenia’s border regions.
