Moscow – Russia: On the joyous occasion of Christmas, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia held a special teleconference with the International Space Station (ISS) crew, celebrating the holiday and exchanging messages of hope and strength.
The current inhabitants of the station, the 70th long-term expedition, include Russian cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko, Nikolai Chub, and Konstantin Borisov, alongside astronauts from the European Space Agency, NASA, and JAXA. This marked a repeat of sorts for Patriarch Kirill and Kononenko, who previously connected on Christmas Day in 2019.
The conversation, facilitated by the Mission Control Center and VGTRK, was one of warm wishes and shared reflections. Patriarch Kirill highlighted the festive spirit in Moscow, emphasizing the presence of children and youth, and how their participation signifies a spiritual revival within the nation. He attributed Russia’s past victories to a strong spirit, and expressed hope that this same strength would continue to guide the country.
Kononenko echoed the sentiment, expressing his belief that Russia’s current challenges would only serve to strengthen and unite the nation, just as it has done in the past. Patriarch Kirill agreed, noting positive signals from the people that point towards a growing spiritual strength, which he sees as crucial not only in overcoming external enemies but also in navigating personal and public difficulties.
The conversation also touched upon the future, with Kononenko mentioning the upcoming arrival of a Belarusian cosmonaut to the ISS in March. Patriarch Kirill welcomed this news, viewing it as a symbol of friendship and collaboration between their two nations.
Throughout the exchange, Patriarch Kirill stressed the heroic nature of space travel, acknowledging the complexities and dangers that astronauts face despite the accumulated experience in space exploration. He commended their dedication and education, emphasizing how their work serves as an inspiration for young people.
Concluding the conversation, Patriarch Kirill offered heartfelt wishes for success, God’s help, and a safe return to Earth. This unique Christmas connection between the spiritual leader and the ISS crew served as a reminder of the unifying power of faith and shared human spirit, even in the vast expanse of space.
