Addis Ababa- Ethiopia: A series of brutal attacks against the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has left the community of Jeju District in Arsi Zone reeling after the tragic killings of a rector and three faithful. The violent incidents occurred at the Church of the Nativity of Christ in Angodecha locality, raising alarm about safety and security in the area.

On May 18, 2025, Mrs. Seneye Tejneh was tragically killed inside the place of worship which was followed by another attack on June 4, 2025, where Priest Tesfa Alemu, the rector of the Angodecha Church, along with community elders Mr. Kifle Gebre Kirstos and Mr. Begashaw Seyum, were gunned down by unidentified assailants. These targeted acts of violence have left the local Ethiopian Orthodox community in mourning and fear.

In addition to the fatalities, one individual sustained an injury from gunfire and is currently receiving medical treatment. Reports indicate that an unknown number of congregation members were taken captive into the wilderness by the attackers. The situation has been exacerbated by the retreat of local militia members who were meant to protect the community, further leaving residents feeling vulnerable.

In response to the escalating violence, the Diocesan Office of the District of Jeju has reached out in a letter to the Archdiocese of Arsi, urgently requesting increased security measures and information on the whereabouts of the kidnapped parishioners.

These assaults against clergy and Church members have been part of a disturbing pattern of violence in various regions of Oromia, Ethiopia. Despite ongoing concerns raised by the Church and local communities, lasting solutions to combat this trend remain elusive.
