Moscow- Russia: On August 19, 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev visited the Cathedral of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women in Baku. The visit took place during the Russian President’s state visit to Azerbaijan.
Bishop Alexy of Baku and Azerbaijan, along with the clergy of the Baku diocese, greeted the heads of state at the cathedral, according to the diocesan website. The archpastor shared the history of the temple and its restoration, expressing deep gratitude to Ilham Aliyev for the attention the Azerbaijani state shows to the needs of the country’s Orthodox community.
During the visit, President Putin presented the cathedral with an icon of the Transfiguration of the Lord, which was celebrated on that day. In turn, President Aliyev gifted a handmade silver tray and a newly printed publication dedicated to the Orthodox churches of Baku. As a symbolic gesture, both leaders received baskets of fruit as a memorable gift.
