Pope Tawadros II Welcomes Lebanese President Aoun in Historic Cairo Visit

Cairo – Egypt: His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, on Monday, May 19, 2025, received Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun and his accompanying delegation at the Papal Residence in Cairo. This visit marks a significant moment as it is President Aoun’s first to the headquarters of the Coptic Orthodox Church.

Pope Tawadros II expressed his sincere joy at the visit and conveyed his happiness regarding the noticeable improvements in Lebanon’s security and economic situation since President Aoun took office. He emphasized the deep affection Egyptians hold for Lebanon and voiced strong hopes for the nation to quickly regain its former glory.

During the meeting, His Holiness spoke about the Coptic Church’s ancient roots, founded in the first century A.D., and lauded its robust relationship with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, as well as with all governmental institutions and segments of Egyptian society. He also extended wishes for a swift recovery to His Beatitude Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros al-Rahi, the Patriarch of the Maronite Church in Lebanon.

President Aoun, for his part, conveyed his gratitude for the warm reception. He affirmed that he, along with the Lebanese government and parliament, is focused on a future that moves beyond the significant suffering Lebanon has endured. He stated his firm resolve to prevent a return to past difficulties, aiming for Lebanon to reclaim its previous stature with the crucial support of friends and allies, notably Egypt and President El-Sisi. President Aoun highlighted the enduring closeness of Egypt and its people to Lebanon, emphasizing their cherished place in the hearts of the Lebanese.

Concluding the meeting, President Aoun extended an invitation to His Holiness Pope Tawadros II to visit Lebanon at his earliest convenience. Following their discussions, President Aoun inscribed a message in the VIP guestbook and proceeded with his delegation to visit St. Mark Cathedral, where they were provided with insights into its rich history, architectural details, and significant events.
