Cairo – Egypt: His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, recently received a high-level delegation from the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church. The delegation, led by Archbishop Abuna Basilios of the Northern Red Sea Region, delivered a message from the Eritrean Holy Synod and discussed the upcoming election of the new Eritrean Patriarch.
The meeting, held at the Papal Residence in Cairo, was attended by several Coptic Orthodox bishops. The discussions focused on the electoral process, which is scheduled to take place in Eritrea on December 9, 2024. The subsequent ordination and installation of the newly elected Patriarch are planned for January 2025 in Asmara, the Eritrean capital.
The two churches have a long-standing historical relationship, formalized by a protocol signed in May 1998. This protocol outlines the ecclesiastical procedures for selecting the Eritrean Patriarch and emphasizes the shared Orthodox faith and the special status of the Coptic Orthodox Church as the See of Saint Mark.
