Pope Tawadros II Hosts the Week of Prayer for Unity

Cairo-Egypt: The weekly Wednesday meeting of His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, which was held in St. Mark’s Cathedral in Abbasiya on February 15, 2023, hosted the first day of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which is organized by the Council of Churches Egypt, under the slogan “Learn to do good. Seek the truth.” (Is 1:17).
The activities of the first day were attended by representatives of member churches of the Council of Churches of Egypt. The Co-Secretary of the Coptic Orthodox Church, Father Rev. Bishoy Helmy, delivered a speech, followed by a speech by Rev. Refaat Fikry, Co-Secretary of the Evangelical Church. Father Rev. Yeshua Yacoub, Secretary-General of the Council delivered a speech, followed by a recitation. Selected biblical texts and some church hymns were sung.
Prayers were prayed for the unity of Christians, for the suffering, the outcast and the homeless, for Egypt and for the peace of the region and the world. The prayers concluded with the Lord’s Prayer in the Armenian, Syriac, Greek, English, Coptic and Arabic languages.
Then Mr. Gerges Salih, Honorary General Secretary of the Middle East Council of Churches delivered a speech.
The meeting concluded with the speech of His Holiness the Pope, during which he meditated on the verse “Learn to do good.” Seek the truth.” (Is 1:17), which is the motto of the week of prayer, and His Holiness linked it with prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, which is one of the basics of the great fast that begins in the Coptic Church next Monday.
