Pope Tawadros II Hosts Estonian President Alar Karis in Cairo

Cairo – Egypt: On November 6, 2024, His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, warmly received Mr. Alar Karis, President of the Republic of Estonia, along with his delegation, at the Papal Residence in Cairo.
During their meeting, Pope Tawadros expressed his delight at the visit, highlighting Egypt’s historical and geographical significance. He described Egypt as a land shaped by its ancient civilizations, including Pharaonic, Christian, and Islamic influences, and emphasized the unity of the Egyptian people, irrespective of religion. His Holiness noted the blessings of the Holy Family’s historic journey through Egypt, which is deeply cherished by Egyptians.
The Pope elaborated on the rich heritage of the Coptic Orthodox Church, founded by Saint Mark the Apostle in Alexandria. He discussed its foundational pillars of faith, martyrdom, and monasticism, mentioning Saint Anthony as the father of monasticism with his monastery near the Red Sea.
His Holiness also highlighted the Church’s strong relationships with the Egyptian state and various religious and governmental institutions, including President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Al-Azhar. He praised the Church Building Law enacted under President Sisi, calling it a landmark step for Christian worship in Egypt.
The Pope shared insights into the Church’s spiritual and social roles, including the establishment of schools and hospitals that serve all Egyptians equally. He explained the purpose of Sunday Schools in nurturing young Christians through the study of the Holy Bible, doctrine, and rituals.
President Karis expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and shared Estonia’s cultural richness shaped by diverse influences, including Russians, Poles, and Danes. He emphasized Estonia’s commitment to digital advancement and education and expressed a desire to enhance cooperation between Egyptian and Estonian universities.
Following their discussions, President Karis signed the V.I.P. visitors’ book and toured the exterior of St. Mark’s Cathedral with His Holiness. The visit underscored the importance of fostering mutual understanding and collaboration between the two nations and their religious and cultural institutions.
