Patriarchate of Jerusalem Expresses Deep Concern Over Egyptian Court Order Impacting Saint Catherine’s Monastery

Jerusalem-Holy Land: The Patriarchate of Jerusalem issued a statement today, expressing “deep troubled” over recent moves by an Egyptian Court Order to allegedly seize lands surrounding the historic Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai. The Patriarchate emphasized its ecclesiastical jurisdiction over the Monastery, asserting its sacred obligation to ensure the continuation of Christian worship on this holy ground, which has been continuously inhabited for 17 centuries.

The statement, titled “Show mercy to those who honor my memory,” in reference to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, highlighted the monastery’s profound sacred status for all Christians, being the site where God appeared to Moses in the burning bush and housing the relics of Saint Catherine.

“We condemn any infringement on the physical or jurisdictional status of our places of worship,” the Patriarchate declared, firmly standing for the right to worship safely and freely, which necessitates unimpeded access and safe passage for pilgrims.

The Patriarchate underscored the Monastery’s historical significance, noting the Letter of Protection (Ashtiname) granted by “Prophet Mohammed (PBUH)” in 623 AD and reaffirmed by Sultan Selim I in 1517. This, they stated, makes the Monastery “an enshrinement of peace between Christians and Muslims, and a refuge of hope for a world mired by conflict.” The Patriarchate called upon Egyptian authorities to uphold this esteemed tradition and ensure freedom of worship and access to the monastery, allowing it to continue its “embodiment of peaceful Christian witness, education, and welcome.”

The statement also acknowledged the official assurances issued yesterday by the Egyptian authorities, affirming the sanctity and integrity of the monastery and promising no infringement upon it. Despite these assurances, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem stated it will “monitor the situation closely and will thoroughly look into the said court decision, and if needed, the Patriarchate will condemn and act upon any encroachment on the Monastery or infringement over access to this holy site.”
