Prague – Czech Republic: The Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church in the Czech Lands and Slovakia has issued a strong condemnation of the Ukrainian parliament’s recent decision to ban religious organizations linked to Russia, including the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

In a statement released on September 3, 2024, the Synod expressed deep concern and sorrow over the bill’s passage, noting that it marks a continuation of decades of persecution and oppression faced by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The Synod compared the situation to the treatment of the Christian Church by totalitarian regimes, highlighting the irony of a democratic state adopting such a repressive measure.

The Synod emphasized its support for Metropolitan Onufriy of Kyiv and All Ukraine and the entire Ukrainian Orthodox Church, expressing solidarity and offering prayers for their well-being. The statement also called upon the clergy and believers of the Orthodox Church in the Czech Lands and Slovakia to continue praying for peace in Ukraine and the world.

The Synod’s condemnation highlights the international concern over the growing religious intolerance and persecution in Ukraine. It serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding basic human rights and freedoms, even in times of conflict and political tension.
