New Diocese Established in Moldova: Orthodox Church of Moldova Welcomes Diocese of Soroca and Drochia

Chişinău – Moldova: The Orthodox Church of Moldova celebrated the inauguration of its newest diocese, the Diocese of Soroca and Drochia, on June 25, 2024. The ceremony, held in the “Holy Martyr Dimitrie” church in Soroca, marked a significant development for the Orthodox Church of Moldova.

The establishment of the Diocese of Soroca and Drochia was not a sudden decision. The Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Moldova officially decreed the creation of the new diocese on April 23, 2024. This decision was then subsequently approved by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on May 30, 2024, solidifying the move. The inauguration ceremony on June 25 marked the culmination of this process.

Metropolitan Vladimir, the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Moldova, led the ceremony. Archpriests, abbots, abbesses, priests from the newly established diocese, and believers from various localities across Moldova participated in the event. Dignitaries including parliamentarians, district presidents, and local mayors were also present, signifying the importance of this occasion.

Following a service, the official document establishing the Diocese of Soroca and Drochia was read. This synodal charter outlined the formation of the new diocese and the appointment of its archbishop, His Grace John. Metropolitan Vladimir delivered a message to the clergy, authorities, and the assembled crowd. Presidents of the Soroca and Drochia districts, as well as Archpriest Nicolae Craveț, representing the clergy of the new diocese, all offered their remarks.

The newly appointed Archbishop John expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Metropolitan Vladimir for his blessing and guidance. He also thanked the clergy, authorities, and local Christian elders for their support and prayers.
