Addis Ababa- Ethiopia: Debre Selam Holy Savior Cathedral in Addis Ababa and Legahare Square in Dire Dawa City were filled with the melodious hymns of myriads for the second and for the first time respectively as crowds gathered to celebrate the Nativity of the Lord. The event, held on Monday, January 6, 2025, the eve of Christmas, was organized by Janderebaw Association (an association named after the Ethiopian Eunuch) in collaboration with Church officials, bringing together Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo youths to honor the birth of Jesus Christ.
His Holiness Abune Mathias, Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, and other high-ranking Church officials joined the event in Addis Ababa, with His Eminence Archbishop Abune Henok of Addis Ababa giving opening remarks, and His Eminence Archbishop Abune Mekarios of Western Canada and Its Surroundings delivering a closing benediction. In Dire Dawa, the Bishop of the Diocese, His Grace Abune Bertolomeos attended the celebrations.
The hymns, sung by a larger crowd than the previous year, carried a message of hope, peace, and unity for Ethiopia amidst challenges such as civil war, earthquakes, and drought. Additionally, a scene titled “Christmas Message From Myriads To Olympiad” was shared in opposition to recent events at the Olympics where Christianity and Christian symbols were mocked.
