Moscow – Russia: The Synod decided to relieve His Grace Metropolitan Hilarion of his duties as head of the Budapest-Hungarian Diocese and to retire him. This decision follows the findings of a Commission that investigated the Metropolitan’s conduct.
The Synod expressed concerns regarding the discrepancy between Metropolitan Hilarion’s personal life and the expected behavior of a monk and clergyman. The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, will address these concerns directly with the Metropolitan.
Metropolitan Hilarion will now serve at the Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic.
Metropolitan Mark of Ryazan and Mikhailovsky has been appointed as the temporary administrator of the Budapest-Hungarian Diocese.
The Holy Synod has concluded the work of the investigative Commission. However, if new information regarding this matter emerges, the Patriarch may reinstate the Commission or establish a new process for further investigation.
