Metropolitan Elia Elected New Archbishop of Helsinki and Finland

Helsinki – Finland: In a historic decision, Metropolitan Elia of Oulu has been elected as the new Archbishop of Helsinki and Finland. The election took place on November 28th, 2024, during a closed-ticket vote by the church council.

The Orthodox Church of Helsinki officially announced the results on November 29th, 2024, around 11:45 AM. Metropolitan Elia received 24 votes, while Bishop Sergei garnered 9 votes.

The election of Metropolitan Elia follows the resignation of Archbishop Leo and the subsequent selection process by the Finnish Orthodox Church. The Holy Synod of Ecumenical Patriarchate, recognizing the qualifications and dedication of Metropolitan Elia, unanimously approved his appointment.

Metropolitan Elia is set to return to Finland on Monday, December 2, 2024. His official enthronement ceremony will take place at the Uspenski Cathedral on December 15, 2024.

Metropolitan Elia, born on December 8th, 1961, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He has served as Metropolitan of Oulu since 2014 and is known for his strong leadership and commitment to interfaith dialogue.
