Sofia – Bulgaria: In a shocking incident, the grave of the late Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan Neophytus of Sofia was desecrated for the second time this year. An unknown individual stole a mother-of-pearl icon of the Resurrection of Christ, embedded in the sepulchral cross, from the Patriarch’s tomb, located in the Metropolitan Cathedral “St. Nedelya”. The incident occurred in the early hours of July 20, 2024.

The first act of vandalism took place in April 2024, causing widespread outrage and condemnation. The Bulgarian Patriarchate has strongly denounced these acts of sacrilege and is working tirelessly to restore the Patriarch’s final resting place.

Law enforcement authorities have been notified of both incidents and are investigating the cases. The Patriarchate has appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the perpetrators.
