Georgian Orthodox Church and Environment Ministry of Georgia Join Forces for Ecological Improvement

Tbilisi -Georgia: In a significant development for Georgia’s environmental future, a meeting was held on March 15,2024, between the Georgian Orthodox Church and the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture. Metropolitan Shio (Mujiri) of Senaki and Chkhorotsku, acting as the seat of the Patriarchal throne, welcomed Minister Otar Shamugia for discussions focused on the critical importance of environmental protection and forest conservation efforts for the country. Both parties acknowledged the pressing need for sustainable practices and responsible environmental stewardship.
To solidify their commitment to tackling ecological challenges, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between the Georgian Patriarchate and the Ministry. This agreement aims to strengthen ties between the Church and the government. The memorandum outlines shared responsibilities, with the Church playing a role in promoting environmental awareness and the Ministry providing expertise and resources. This collaboration between the influential Church and the government has the potential to significantly impact public attitudes and encourage sustainable practices, creating a more robust framework for protecting Georgia’s natural resources.
