Helsinki – Finland: Archbishop Elia of Helsinki and All Finland met with Cypriot Ambassador Demetris Samuel at the Liisankatu residence on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, to discuss a range of pressing issues, including the war in Ukraine, ecclesiastical challenges, and potential future collaboration.

The meeting, also attended by Theological Secretary Jelisei Heikkilä, saw Ambassador Samuel congratulate Archbishop Elia on his recent election and enthronement. The Ambassador specifically praised the Archbishop’s enthronement speech, highlighting its lasting impact.

Discussions centered on the ongoing war in Ukraine, with Archbishop Elia stressing the importance of honesty in crisis situations. “During war, you have to be honest, honesty is the key to all actions,” he stated. Ambassador Samuel echoed this sentiment, noting that the war is being discussed openly in Cyprus and the Church of Cyprus. He also expressed concern about the situation in Estonia, which falls under the Finnish Embassy’s purview.

The meeting explored various ecclesiastical challenges, including the alienation of young people from liturgical life in Cyprus due to language barriers. Ambassador Samuel noted the positive changes in the Church of Cyprus under recent leadership, with a move towards more open-minded decisions.

Future cooperation opportunities were also discussed, particularly concerning Cyprus’s upcoming EU presidency. Ambassador Samuel extended an invitation for the Archbishop to visit Cyprus, which Archbishop Elia accepted.

The Ambassador also commended the work of Filantropia, the Orthodox Church’s charitable organization, and offered the Embassy’s support. Archbishop Elia expressed gratitude for the recognition and affirmed the Church’s commitment to practical charity. “We are open to any cooperation that promotes the practical implementation of charity,” he stated.
