Tallinn- Estonia: The Estonian Orthodox Christian Church (EPCC) has expressed its heartfelt gratitude to President Alar Karis of Estonia for his decision to not proclaim the amended Churches and Parishes Act, returning it to the Riigikogu (Estonian Parliament). The President’s decision, based on the law’s incompatibility with the Estonian Constitution, particularly regarding the disproportionate restriction of freedom of religion and association, has been welcomed by the Church.

In a press release issued today, the EPCC emphasized its commitment to a “constructive dialogue between religious organizations and the state, based on mutual respect, legality and democratic principles.” The Church stated that while believing in God, it also respects the law and justice, and was prepared to defend its constitutional rights through legal channels, both domestically and internationally.

“Today’s decision by the president has strengthened our confidence that we are on the right path,” the EPCC stated.

The Church voiced its hope that the Ministry of the Interior would engage in further negotiations based on the principles of mutual respect and legality. They aim to demonstrate that their canonical connection with their Mother Church does not pose a threat to the security of the Estonian state, and that allegations suggesting otherwise are unfounded. The EPCC highlighted its historical loyalty to Estonia, its respect for the people, and its support for democratic values, including freedom of religion.

During the Easter season, the EPCC extended special thanks to its clergy and parishioners for their “unwavering faith, patience and trust.” The Church also expressed gratitude to those who publicly defended it, despite a widespread information campaign against it, stating that “moral support and prayers give us strength in defending the church truth and constitutional rights.”
