ESG – OCP News Service – 06/11/2024
Asmara – Eritrea: The Holy Synod of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church stated in a press release on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, that it will appoint its Patriarch. The See has been vacant for about two years since His Holiness Abune Qerlos of Eritrea entered eternal rest on December 1, 2022.
The statement, which expressed the Church’s oneness, holiness, universality, apostolicity, and canonical autocephalicity, did not disclose further information regarding the matter or when consecration would take place. The Holy Synod asked monastics, the clergy, and the faithful in the country and abroad to pray for a better implementation of the election and appointment processes. His Grace Abune Petros, the Archbishop of Central Eritrea, has been leading the Church as Locum Tenens since December 3, 2022.
