Nicosia – Cyprus: In a recent interview with the National Herald and a speech delivered at an anti-occupation concert, Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus decried the ongoing Turkish occupation of Northern Cyprus and urged a more forceful response from Greece and the international community.

Looking Back on the Invasion

Archbishop Georgios recounted his personal experience on the day of the 1974 invasion, highlighting the shock and fear that gripped Cypriots. He lamented the destruction and displacement caused by the invasion, emphasizing the ongoing attempt by Turkey to erase Greek and Christian heritage from the occupied territories.

Criticism of Greek Government

The Archbishop sharply criticized the Greek government, accusing them of viewing Cyprus as a burden and failing to adequately support the island nation. He argued that Greece’s appeasement of Turkey has emboldened the aggressor and endangered the future of Hellenism as a whole.

Demands and Path Forward

Archbishop Georgios called for a renewed commitment to the liberation of Cyprus. He demanded a solution based on “human rights” that includes:

  • Withdrawal of all occupying troops and settlers from Cyprus
  • Free movement, property acquisition, and settlement rights for Cypriots throughout the island

The Archbishop urged the Cypriot government to change its negotiation strategy and to demand more from its European allies. He also called for the mobilization of Hellenism worldwide to raise awareness and advocate for Cyprus.

Beyond the Interview

The Archbishop’s comments echo his message at the “HOW MORE?” anti-occupation concert. There, he condemned the ongoing visits by Cypriots to the occupied territories, arguing that they strengthen the Turkish economy and legitimize the occupation.

A Call to Action

Archbishop Georgios’ powerful message serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for a unified Cyprus. His words urge Cypriots, Greeks, and the international community to take a more proactive stance in demanding an end to the Turkish occupation.
