Census: 95% of Moldova’s Population Identifies as Orthodox

Chişinău – Moldova: The 2024 census in the Republic of Moldova has revealed that while Orthodox Christians still make up the vast majority of the population, their numbers have decreased slightly over the past decade. According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, 95% of Moldovan citizens identify as Orthodox Christian, a 1.1% decrease since the 2014 census.

The census also showed a small increase in other religious affiliations. Baptists make up 1.1% of the population, followed by Jehovah’s Witnesses at 0.7%, Pentecostals at 0.5%, and Gospel Christians at 0.3%. Atheists account for 0.6% of the population, while 0.8% claim to have no religion. Islam and Roman Catholicism each represent 0.1% of the population. The data was reported by Ştiri.md.

Orthodox Jurisdiction in Moldova

The Eastern Orthodox Church in Moldova is represented by two jurisdictions: the Metropolis of Chișinău and All Moldova, commonly referred to as the Moldovan Orthodox Church, which is under the Russian Orthodox Church, and the Metropolis of Bessarabia, which is under the Romanian Orthodox Church.
